File your claim

A social security disability case starts when you file your claim with the Social Security Administration (SSA). You can call SSA at 1-800-772-1213. There are also forms available online that you can complete in connection with your claim. The important thing is to file your case as soon as possible. You may lose benefits by waiting to file your claim .  It can take three to five months to receive a decision on your initial claim.

Reconsideration
If your benefits are denied, you have the opportunity to appeal the decision. This appeal, referred to as a reconsideration appeal , must be filed within sixty (60) days from the date you were denied. As part of your reconsideration , you will need to update your medical condition and provide any new evidence regarding your medical condition. A decision on your reconsideration can take another three months.

Hearing
If you are denied, you will have the right to request a disability hearing before an administrative law judge. Again, this appeal must be filed within sixty (60) days from the date of denial of your reconsideration. You must be patient when waiting for your disability hearing . It can take up to 18 months before your hearing . You must keep your medical records current and continue to inform Social Security of your current condition. After your hearing , you will receive a written decision by the administrative law judge (ALJ). A fully favorable decision means your disability has been established. An unfavorable decision means you were not successful in establishing your disability.

Appeals Council
Again, another appeal is available, this time to the Appeals Council, and this must be filed within sixty (60) days from the date of the decision of the administrative law judge.
